Welcome to the new baseball season!
This past weekend all grades kicked off the 2017-18 season, in which Windsor Royals has entered 17 teams!
Week one review from around the grounds….
U8 kicked off their first game against Pine Hills with some new, excited members! By all accounts, they all had a great time. Thanks to Gary and Nielson and Rachel for taking the reins, they are in great baseball hands.
In Rookie Ball, Royals took on Carina Redsox Raptors. With some new faces in the team the “squad” kicked off the season, unfortunately going down 17-13. From next week, the team will be split as we had a late rush of sign-ons. This weekend we will have the Windsor Royals Cubs with Nathan coaching and Rob coaching the Windsor Royals River Cats.
Little league this season we have four teams, 2 teams in the Rams division and 2 teams in the Bandits division. WR LL Rams Blue played hard with an 11-5 loss to Padres Red. WR LL Rams Red also going down to Padres White 13-2. Better luck next week guys.
WR LL Bandits Blue had a convincing win over All Stars 21-0,a no-hitter. WR LL Bandits Red lost to Redsox 10-5, with Coach Dave saying “First game, so good to get the cobwebs out.”
Junior League Bandit teams both started the season off with wins over Carina 8-4 and Beenleigh 9-2. Callum Wallace was the player of the week in standout performance with 13 strikeouts.
This season our Senior League Rams players have teamed up with Carina to have a composite team and met for the first time at the field! Unfortunately they lost 14-4 to Redlands.
Senior League Bandits defeated the Carina Redsox 9-7 in a high scoring, tight start to the season; down 7-4 in the bottom of the last inning, the Bandits scored 5 to take the win. All 3 pitchers contributed to the result, with the difference between the teams being our bats, where the Bandits managed 8 hits to Carina’s 4.
Player of the week goes to Joel Wilson who went 2 for 2 plus a walk, with a single, a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, along with an inning in relief for 2 strikeouts with one earned run. 1 MVP point went to Brody Donohoe who hit a big triple with 1 run scored.
Windsor has entered two under 20’s teams this season and as BQ would have it, they matched them up for their first game. To make it easier to follow through the season the teams have taken on the names WR Blue (Tony Thomson’s oldies) and WR Red (Ryan Ihle’s newbies). the game was close with only a few hits, won by the “Oldies” in the top of the 6th with a scoreless inning by the ‘newbies’.
Seniors Division 5 has two Windsor teams; Red and Blue (I see a common thread here). David “Hammer” Hemsley is leading WR Blue with 5 senior rookies. Unfortunately All Stars did not have that many and the team went down 11-1, with Sophie Marriott and Henry Ole getting their first hit in baseball. Our more experienced team, WR Red getting the win over Rapids Green 7-5. Thanks Tex from SL for helping out the team.
Division 1-3 all took on Redland Rays.
Div 3, led by Cookie won 10-5 to start off the season.
Div 2 had a great first hit out for the team against an older side. Exciting year ahead! Player of the week for the team was Cooper Thomson getting the win 9-5.
Div1 started Friday night with win 1-7, even with a threat of a washout with the infield tarp getting its first use of the season. Matt Watson started Sunday’s game strong for 6 innings. Jimmy Albury and Cesar Perez finished off the game for a win 0-9. Logan Wade hit a home run late in the game.
Great First Week!
Well done to all the teams and a big thanks to all the coaches, managers, scorers and volunteers. Windsor Royals Sports Club cannot do it without you!
Division 1 will play for the Much Cup at Pine Hills this Friday at 7.30, so let support the team. Check out our facebook page for more information.
